Vera Wang has been in the wedding dress business since 1990 but says, “I’ve been designing since I was 8. I started sketching dresses I could wear when skating. I was always involved in all aspects of skating, not just the technique, the choreography, the music, but the visual aspects, too – what I should wear” (She has designed costumes for figure skaters, including Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek). Wang is not one to stick with just a single aspect of the things in which she is involved. After instant success as a bridal gown designer, she began creating designs for Vera Wang Bridesmaids.

Wang believes the bridal party’s walk down the aisle sets the scene for the bride’s big entrance. The Vera Wang Maid-to-Order collection (her current line of bridesmaid dresses) brings out the modern elegance and versatility she goes for in all her work and is the perfect prelude to the climax of the ceremony. In her book, Vera Wang on Weddings, Wang talks about how each wedding should be a unique, and should play to the sense of style and personalities of the people involved. She feels that the dress should display the woman and not the other way around, stating, “I want people to see the dress, but focus on the woman.”
In addition to bridesmaid dresses, Vera Wang has expanded her brand to include fragrance, jewelry, eyewear, shoe and house ware lines making it quite possible to create the wedding party’s whole look through her brand. In 2002, Wang came out with The Vera Wang China and Crystal Collection, followed in 2007, by her diffusion line (Simply Vera). Simply Vera (exclusively at Kohl’s) is a line created to be easier on the pocketbook while still bringing the quality we have come to expect from Vera Wang. The line includes outfits, accessories, intimates, shoes, jewelry and even a bath and bedding line.
